Caring homes are needed for four cats and kittens abandoned outside a country pub.

Melissa and Daryl Heffer took over The Compasses, Pattiswick, near Braintree, ten weeks ago.

Mrs Heffer said a strange tortoiseshell cat first visited the pub last Sunday and a grey-and-white one the next day.

She said: "We didn't realise it at first but someone had dumped the cats in the car park. Later, my husband found two margarine tubs under a tree with food and water in.

"Then on Tuesday, my son Jack was playing football in the garden and found two kittens in the ditch."

Mrs Heffer initially thought she would have to look after the abandoned cats as all cat rescue centres she called were full but places have been found for them at the RSPCA Danaher rescue centre, Wethersfield, until new owners can be found.

Anyone who can offer any of the cats a home can ring the RSPCA on 01371 851201.
