A hospital was today investigating the disappearance of a foetus after a woman suffered a miscarriage.
The woman miscarried at Colchester General Hospital, said a hospital spokesman.
A statement from the hospital said: "Essex Rivers Healthcare NHS Trust can confirm that it is investigating the disappearance of a foetus from its gynaecology unit at Colchester General Hospital.
"The foetus was the result of a miscarriage on Tuesday, August 20.
"On discovering its disappearance the Trust immediately instigated a thorough search and launched a full investigation."
Essex Police are involved in the investigation in an "advisory capacity", said a spokesman for the force.
