A former mayor and mayoress of Thurrock have celebrated their golden wedding.

Arthur and Diana Clarke marked 50 years of marriage with a family party.

The couple, who were Thurrock's first citizens in 1985/86, met at a scout and guide social at North Stifford.

Arthur was in the North Stifford Scouts and Diana in Little Thurrock Guides. They were married six years later at St Mary's Church, Little Thurrock.

Arthur, who was also one of Thurrock's longest-serving magistrates, worked at Procter and Gamble's West Thurrock factory for 27 years. Diana made her career as a teacher.

The couple who live at Andersons, Stanford-le-Hope, have a son and a daughter, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
