An evil and cowardly thug who put an 86-year-old woman in hospital for the sake of just £30 was today being hunted by sickened cops.

The robber punched the elderly woman in the face when she opened the front door of her Pitsea flat and as she fell she fractured her thigh.

Even when she begged him to hand her the phone so that she could call for an ambulance he gave the chilling reply "I'll give you something more" and left her helpless on the floor.

Bravely, and despite being in great pain, the woman managed to crawl to the phone and raise the alarm. She was then taken to Basildon Hospital where she had to undergo surgery yesterday afternoon for a fractured femur.

The incident happened at about 9.15pm on Sunday when the thug knocked on the door of the woman's flat in Brackendale Avenue, Pitsea.

Det Sgt Liam Osborne, of Pitsea CID, said: "This kind of attack is as serious as it gets. He assaulted her immediately, without hesitation or conscience. He clearly has no compulsion against being violent."
