A motorcyclist and his passenger were rushed to Colchester General Hospital by helicopter after an accident.
The A12 at the Ardleigh interchange was closed as the air ambulance landed to pick up the man and woman at about 10am today.
No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
The accident happened outside the Ardleigh Crown pub and a section of the London-bound carriageway was closed for about 45 minutes.
Stanway Traffic Police are appealing for winesses to call 01206 762512.
