Robbers left a student with concussion and a suspected fractured leg after knocking him to the ground.
The vicious attack, in which a bag was stolen, happened early on Sunday morning in Greenstead Road, Greenstead, Colchester.
As the student walked along, two men got out of a car, ran towards him and pushed him to the ground.
They took a bag and left the student injured on the ground. An ambulance was later called and the victim was found to have leg and head injuries.
Both robbers were white, aged about 18 or 19 and had short, cropped hair. One was wearing a dark-coloured hooded top while the second was wearing a light-coloured hooded top.
The car they were using, in which a third man was also seen, was large, old and dark-coloured.
