The problem at St Anne's Primary School, in Barnardiston Road, has been so bad that the school has deliberately waited until near the end of the summer holidays to repair the damage.

Site manager Tom Henderson said 42 windows had been smashed by vandals since the beginning of June.

"It has got to the point where there is no point getting them done one by one. We have had about two or three a week, I would say.

"It ranges from people getting and playing ball games in the grounds to proper vandalism and things being thrown through. It is basically because there is nothing to do around here."

But he said the cost of repairs, which would have to come out of the school budget, would now be between £600 and £800.

Mr Henderson said he had tried to mend a few of the windows himself but had to call in professionals for the rest because there were too many.

"The worst we had was 23 broken in one go and I would say since last August between 90 and 100 windows have been broken," he added.

Anyone with information about vandalism at the school should contact Colchester police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
