Part of a former Ministry of Defence complex is to be used for company team-building exercises involving military-style training.

However, no guns or other armaments, or even paint ball guns, will be allowed, according to Rochford District Council.

Potton Island is part of the complex which includes Foulness Island and the New Ranges at Shoebury and is now operated by QinetiQ, although still owned by the Ministry of Defence.

QinetiQ offshoot, the Regiment Ltd, which operates from a one-time highly secret complex on the isolated island, is applying to change conditions of use of part of its area from original plans.

Two years ago, the council gave permission for "corporate training use" for "team-bonding exercises" on the land, some of which has taken place.

A council spokesman said: "Our conditions were very stringent as Potton Island is an important site for birds and wildlife and we wanted to ensure there would not be any problems with explosives, pyrotechnics or anything of that type."

He added it was now planned to allow the use of the site until midnight and also military-type manoeuvres.
