Just call him Beckham! After all, had Joe Keith's stunning 80th minute winner had been scored by charismatic England skipper David Beckham the national media would be going bonkers about it for weeks to come.

Sadly for the modest Colchester United hero his cracking 20-yard free-kick will merely be consigned to the respective results columns and private videos of the match handed to the U's and Peterborough managers on the final whistle.

The former West Ham youngster's sizzler deserves much better because it was by far and away the best thing to happen - another rock solid and stylish U's defensive display excepted - in an otherwise undistinguished and very damp London Road squib.

But Joe Keith sits proudly on top of the Layer Road tree today as Colchester United's top scorer.

And while the U's strikers' goal famine continues - they've failed to score in all five outings - the former West Ham defender has cracked in two of the best.

His 80th minute winner from a 20-yard direct free-kick in a 1-0 win against Peterborough at London Road was right out of David Beckham's top drawer, but Keith modestly claimed he had done nothing special.

He said: "I've not particularly worked hard on my free-kicks this year. I just ran up and hit it. The ball went in via bar and post and I did manage to get a bit of power on the kick.

But Keith insisted this win - the U's first at London Road since the 1972-73 Fourth Division season - wasn't just about his sublime finish.

He said: "A lot is being made of the case about our forwards not getting among the goals to date. They are still working very hard and nobody is on their case.

"That taken for granted, I don't think it's up to us to go and play pretty football against teams like Peterborough. This was a case of us getting dug in and grinding out the result we wanted.

"We believe in ourselves and we have a manager who believes in us."

Meanwhile, Keith is revelling in his new-found glory as the club's leading scorer.

The pint-sized Londoner is currently one ahead of Frenchman Thomas Pinault and Keith said: "Thomas and I are currently shouting our mouths off around the club.

"It's all about goals and we've scored three of the best."

The U's had key defender Mark Warren sent-off for a last-minute foul yesterday and he will be suspended for one match in two weeks' time.
