Two friends enjoying a night out in Chelmsford were attacked by a teenage gang as they made their way home.
The two 20-year-old men, were set upon by up to 10 youths as they left McDonalds restaurant, High Street just after midnight on Friday.
Acting police sergeant Al Davey, of Chelmsford Police, said: "There was an exchange of words and then they were surrounded by eight to ten men and repeatedly kicked and punched to the ground.
"It seems to have been an unprovoked attack."
The gang members are believed to be between 17 and 18 years old. Both victims suffered cuts and bruises and one had a swollen right ear.
Police are investigating whether CCTV footage could help them track the attackers but would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack.
