Revitalised Southend United defender Mark Beard today dedicated the Seasiders' Bank Holiday weekend resurgence to Blues' management team.

The 27-year-old started his first two games of the season as the Shrimpers picked up a maximum six-point haul with a 1-0 win at Oxford, followed by a 2-1 Roots Hall victory against Cambridge.

And the right-back praised Blues boss Rob Newman and his assistants, David Crown and Steve Tilson, for getting Southend back on track.

"We'd failed to win any of our first three games before the weekend, but we were always confident of turning it round," said Beard.

"There were a few boos from the crowd after our last defeat, 3-2 at home to Shrewsbury, but we knew we would soon get things right.

"And it is down to the gaffer and his coaches that we have picked up two good wins during the Bank Holiday programme.

"I'm happy for Rob as he has instilled a great team spirit at the club and everybody wants to do well for him. I've certainly never known the feeling to be so strong here."
