Thousands of protesters are expected to voice their opposition to the planned airport at Cliffe Marshes in Kent when a public meeting is held in south Essex.

Organisers are anticipating a massive turn-out for the protest meeting at The Paddocks in Long Road, Canvey, on Thursday, September 12, which may have to be held in the open air.

One of those behind the protest, Castle Point MP Bob Spink, said: "It is being held at the Paddocks which is the largest hall on Canvey, but I think we could have to bring the meeting outside as we are expecting thousands of people.

"It will be a chance for people to express their views. It will be up to residents to decide but I think most people will be opposed to it. I already know around 95 to 98 per cent of the community objects."

The meeting follows a weekend of activity during which thousands of leaflets were handed out explaining the proposals and advertising the meeting.

Mr Spink stationed himself outside the Iceland superstore in Hadleigh's London Road for two hours, handing out information and plans for the proposed new airport.

He was surrounded by posters he had picked up in Kent which read: "Say No to Cliffe Airport," and the Tory member was busy persuading people to sign a petition against the plans.
