South Essex over-50s are being wooed by supermarket giant Asda as it attempts to fill dozens of vacancies at its local store.

The chain has launched a recruitment drive to lure even more mature workers to join the dozens it already employs at its giant store on the Pipps Hill Retail Park on Miles Gray Road, Basildon.

Currently around 18 per cent of the 250-strong workforce at the store are 50 or older, but impressed by the standard of work that their current older employees put in, managers are now keen to find even more and to take the proportion up to 25 or even 30 per cent.

They are planning an informal coffee morning at the store for people interested in working with them, giving prospective employees a chance to find out more about the company and the opportunities open to them.

The recruitment event is due to take place on Wednesday August 28 between 11am and 12pm.

It is not the first time that Asda has displayed its commitment to employing older people in south Essex.

Only two months ago, 87-year-old Steve Watts was taken on at the company's South Woodham Ferrers branch, where he now works three days a week greeting shoppers as they enter the store.
