A housing trust was today investigating cracks which have appeared in five homes in a Wickford street.
The probe centres on houses in Innes Close on the town's Wick estate.
Bosses at owners London and Quadrant Housing Trust say that evidence so far suggests that four of the homes are affected by settlement or hairline cracking.
But residents believe the cracks in their homes could be subsidence because they have been there for a long time - settlement problems normally only affect newer homes.
However, housing bosses said today they had investigated the cracks at both homes and had concluded they were not caused by subsidence.
A trust spokeswoman described them as "hairline cracking" but said they did not yet have the full results of why the cracks had occurred.
She added they will be monitored.
