Police are offering Castle Point motorists free holders for car tax discs in the latest effort to cut car crime in the borough.

Leslie Bramhill, crime reduction adviser for Castle Point, said car crime is the simplest of all categories to reduce.

It takes people only a moment to check their vehicle is not a target for the thief or a moneybox for a drug addict.

He added: "Most car crimes occur on the highway or on the driveway of residential premises at night.

"Please, if at all possible, put you car in a garage at night.

"If you have no choice but to leave it in the open, please remove all property from it."

Mr Bramhill told how a favourite target in recent crimes has been vehicle road tax discs, which are displayed on windscreens.

But these thefts could be reduced now that Essex Police are giving away the disc holders, which are designed to make the disc unusable if tampered with.

Any drivers who would like a free disc can call the general office at Rayleigh police station on 01268 775533.
