An Essex hockey player was stabbed seven times as he tackled a suspected burglar at his home.

Chelmsford Hockey Club player/coach Craig Fulton and girlfriend Natalie Haynes had just returned to their home in Pretoria, South Africa, when the intruder was discovered.

Despite his injuries, they managed to overcome the intruder and detain him until police arrived.

Chelmsford Hockey Club liaison officer David Kitchiner said he had spoken to both Craig and Natalie who have now gone away for a few days holiday following their ordeal.

"He was in intensive care for one day. I understand one of the knife wounds was only two centimetres away from a vital artery.

"They are both fit people and are recovering well but it was a harrowing experience and I think the psychological scars will take longer to heal."

Mr Kitchiner said Craig, 27, who is player/coach of the men's first team is due to return to Chelmsford at the end of September.

Mr Fulton is a South African who spends his time between Chelmsford and his home country.
