An urgent call has gone out for a residents' parking scheme to be set up to prevent Christmas chaos.

Pressure group Residents Parking - Value for Money, which represents people who live in Napier Avenue, Gordon Road and Ashburnham Road, in Southend - has praised Southend Council for planning a residents' parking scheme in the area.

However, they are worried it will not be ready in time for Christmas and is unlikely to come on stream until the middle of next year.

Paul Ilett, one of the campaign co-ordinators, said residents are already feeling the pressure of a pre-Christmas traffic build-up.

He added: "Last Christmas was a nightmare for many town centre residents, especially in the evenings and weekends. The multi-storey car parks were virtually empty because people coming to the town centre to go Christmas shopping or to meet friends and colleagues were parking in our roads rather than the car parks.

"The knock-on effect is town centre residents are being squeezed out of the parking bays in their own roads and have to park several roads away from where we live. We have already started to notice an increase in parking problems and this is causing great concern."

Cabinet member in charge of transport, Roger Weaver, said council consultants are looking into the question of residents' parking in the town centre area.
