A thief stole cash destined for war veterans.
The teenager snatched a Poppy Appeal collection box from The Old Court Coffee House and Restaurant in Church Street, Colchester.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "It shows that people who steal don't care what it is - whether a charity box or an elderly person's cash.
"They have no qualms about stealing money, which others may desperately need. They are always motivated by their own selfish needs."
The thief was described as white, 16 to 17, 5ft 10ins tall, with a slim build and a shaved head. He was wearing a beige jacket and jeans.
