Fabian Wilnis is dreaming of Cardiff after starring in Ipswich Town's Worthington Cup success against Middlesbrough.

The Dutchman was a pivotal figure in last night's 3-1 third round win at Portman Road, earned thanks to goals from Thomas Gaardsoe, Jamie Clapham and Darren Bent.

After providing a pinpoint cross for the last goal, Wilnis said: "People knock this competition but it's the best and easiest way to get into Europe.

"We reached the semi-finals two years ago and there's no reason why we can't repeat that.

"This was an important and very encouraging win against strong opposition. There was plenty for the manager to be happy about."

Wilnis was handed an unaccustomed role on the right side of midfield.

"It was strange playing ahead of the defence but I enjoyed being involved again and getting a match under my belt," he said.

"It was particularly pleasing to be involved in one of the goals. I saw Darren at the far post and managed to get my cross over the nearest defender."

Town boss Joe Royle handed a debut to former Heybridge keeper James Pullen.

The shotstopper said: "It was a fantastic experience. The crowd got behind me and the players were a big help. I just hope I did enough to show the manager he can count on me if needed."

Meanwhile, Royle dropped a strong hint last night about the identity of the striker he wants to sign on loan.

Asked for an update on the situation, he suggested that the player in question had scored this week.

Francis Jeffers, who Royle nurtured at Everton, is believed to be the mystery man and was on target for Arsenal in their defeat at Sunderland.

The draw for the fourth round of the Worthington Cup takes place on Saturday.
