Families were evacuated and firefighters stood by after a high-pressure gas leak in Bulphan yesterday morning.

A spokesman for Essex Fire and Rescue Service said it was believed a car had "backed into an exposed gas pipe leading to a home" in Old Brentwood Road.

He said: "There was quite a severe leak and we evacuated a few nearby homes and then stood by with hoses laid out just in case there was a spark while Transco shut off the pipe."
