A warning has been issued about bogus callers offering to remove unwanted fridges and freezers -- for a fee.

Thurrock Council issued the alert after being contacted by several Aveley residents who said they had been approached by people claiming to be council officials and asking for £10 to remove the equipment.

A council spokesman said: "We offer this service for free and no council officer will ask for money on the doorstep."
