Villages that have been divided by traffic can become communities again with the opening of the first section of the new A120.
Tony Peel, Essex County Council chairman, launched the 7km-stretch from a new junction west of Dunmow to Stansted yesterday morning in bright sunshine.
Local people watched from above on one of the eight bridges on the section as Mr Peel cut a white ribbon.
County, district and parish councillors from across the area then boarded two coaches to take them along the route.
