A new Tesco superstore could be open in Clacton by the end of the year, creating more than 200 jobs.
The firm wants to build a 70,000 sq ft premises at the eastern end of the multi-million pound Brook Park development off London Road.
Proposals have been submitted to Tendring Council and should go before a planning meeting within the next few weeks. Work would start almost immediately, if permission is granted.
A spokesman for Britton Construction, which is behind the Brook Park scheme, said: "If all goes to plan, people could be shopping at Tesco at Brook Park this Christmas."
