Southend Airport is currently considering proposals from several airlines interested in flying from its runways.

The restoration of passenger services at Southend was made possible by a landmark council decision to allow the relocation of an instrument landing system, the construction of barriers and other safety features.

However, restrictions on plane size, payload size and the number of landings will remain in place.

Spokeswoman for the airport Di Hollander said the airport, which in the past enjoyed significant passenger travel, was at a turning point in its history.

She said: "We're going to aggressively market ourselves to airlines, but what is possible remains to be seen. We are still left with restrictions, but this is a major turning point.

"We are considering a number of reports and proposals."

Airport officials will meet early in February to consider a strategic plan for the airport which includes reports from private airlines.
