Southend United defender Leon Cort admitted he was pleased to have helped the struggling Shrimpers secure a rare clean sheet during last night's drab 0-0 draw with York City at Roots Hall.

The 24-year-old centre back produced another strong performance at the heart of the Blues' back four and admitted his side must now build on the hard-fought point against the Minstermen.

"It was a disappointing game but you have to try and take the positives out of it," said the former Millwall man.

"We got a draw and it was good for us to get a clean sheet. We like to score goals, but it's nice to keep the other team out and it's a good basis for us to build on."

And Cort added he was hopeful the Shrimpers could consistently repeat their well-organised defensive display as they bid to work their way up the table.

"Hopefully, we can keep things tight defensively for the rest of the season and start to get more goals at the other end too," he said.

"It's been a while since we kept a clean sheet in the league and when the team isn't scoring it puts a bit more pressure on us at the back.

"But, while it wasn't the best of games against York, it's a hard fought draw. It's something for us to build on and fingers crossed this can kick start our season."

And caretaker boss Steve Tilson admitted the Blues could have claimed all three points despite a poor first half showing.

"We didn't play well in the opening 45 minutes at all," said the ex-Southend midfielder.

"Our passing was sloppy and it was a little bit like the Scarborough game -- we never got to grips with the game."
