A well known restaurant which has been closed since before Christmas has applied for planning permission to carry out a complete refurbishment.

The owners of Amigos, in Hockley Road, Rayleigh, have submitted plans to Rochford District Council to install two freestanding mezzanine floors on steel posts inside the high-ceilinged former church hall.

Also planned is new flooring, as well as moving the main entrance of the building.

Amigos was originally built in the 1860s as a school but the building became redundant in the early 1970s. It opened as a restaurant after major reconstruction work was carried out because parts of the structure were found to have become unsafe through neglect.

Amigos hit the headlines in the late 1990s when its owners and staff won the lottery jackpot. They later sold it to concentrate on restoration of the Labworth Cafe on Canvey's Eastern Esplanade.
