The A131 has been described as "one of the worst roads in the area" after a head-on collision led to a man being airlifted to hospital.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after a Peugeot Partner, travelling towards Braintree, and a Kia, on its way towards Halstead, collided yesterday.
The smash at about 2.25pm brought traffic chaos throughout the district.
Bocking road traffic police, a fire crew from Halstead, the Essex air ambulance, a land ambulance and a rapid response vehicle arrived at the accident near Penny Potts within minutes of being called.
Police blocked off the A131 at Russell's Road and diverted traffic through Gosfield so they could deal with the injured people and wreckage, as well as cleaning up spilt petrol.
