Passionate Colchester United fans will be able to get their hands on a rare piece of the club's history at an auction of sporting memorabilia.

Two valuable programmes from the U's first games as a football league club were due to go under the hammer at an auction in London today

The pair of matchday programmes were due to go into an auction of sporting memorabilia at Sotheby's auction rooms at London Olympia and date back to 1950.

They will be particularly interesting to die-hard U's fans as they are the first two games ever played by the team after joining the football league in the 1950-51 season.

The first programme is from a match between Colchester and Gillingham on August 19 1950 and the other is from a week later for the U's game against Bristol Rovers.

Sotheby's head of sporting memorabilia Graham Budd said the firm was predicting the programmes would fetch a price of between £400 and £500.
