Southend Council officers will be seeing how long it takes to get from Leigh railway station to the Civic Centre under a special competition which is being organised to mark Green Transport Week.

On Thursday, June 17, the Southend Travel Challenge will record the time it takes for the journey via the London Road by different modes of transport.

The number of calories burnt off by the trip and how much carbon dioxide is emitted per mode of transport will also be recorded.

Those taking part will be:

A bicycle rider

A car driver

A car sharer (with reserved parking space)

A bus passenger

A rail passenger

A runner.

Along with the main event, a number of other activities are being planned by council staff to mark the week, including car shares, two health walks, a cycling advice clinic and bike-to-work day on Friday, June 18.

Staff who cycle to work that day will be entered into a free prize draw for an Exodus cycling holiday for two worth £2,000, a Raleigh Chopper or folding bike.

The week's events will end with a social bike ride along the seafront to the Shore House pub, leaving the fountain in front of the Civic Centre at 4.45pm.
