Karl Duguid said today he will still go ahead with his big testimonial game against West Ham - despite clashing with a similar match between Ipswich Town and Newcastle on the same night.

The popular Colchester United captain learned this week that his bumper Wednesday, July 28 Layer Road spectacle with the Hammers - arranged months ago - is to go ahead at exactly the same time as the Town v Magpies clash at Portman Road in memory of the late Dale Roberts.

The Ipswich match was only announced by former Town and U's boss George Burley last Friday.

Blues media manager Terry Baxter told the Evening Gazette: "I'm sure no-one at our club was aware of the game at Layer Road.

"It is just an unfortunate coincidence, but we really hope both games are very well supported."

Duguid said: "It's a shame the games are going ahead on the same night, but everything about my match has been in place for a long time and there's no chance of changing it."

He added generously: "I'm not going to complain because the Ipswich/Newcastle match is for a great cause in Dale Roberts also. I think my game will attract a big crowd anyway because West Ham have a huge following in and around the Colchester and north-east Essex area."
