Drunken hooligans looking for trouble in Maldon's pubs will be in for a shock after the launch of a new scheme offering zero tolerance on anti-social behaviour.

The debut of Pubwatch, supported by Maldon police, means any drinkers who cause upset in one watering hole will be barred from all of the pubs signed up to the initiative.

David Francis, landlord of the Queen's Head at Hythe Quay, Maldon, is chairman of the group organising the hooligan-busting strategy.

He said the scheme will be particularly helpful with the onset of the Euro 2004 competition, adding: "We do not have a television here so it should not be a problem.

"But other pubs suffer from a bit of over-excitement during football matches and feelings do tend to run very high with the game, especially when England play."

Ray Stannard, crime prevention officer at Maldon, said: "So far about nine Maldon pubs have pledged to take part in Pubwatch but I hope licensed establishments from across the district will also get involved."
