Neighbours used brute strength to lift a car off a young girl who was trapped underneath after a road crash.

They managed to lift the car off the five-year-old's body within seconds of the smash in Essex Close, Rayleigh, saving her from more serious injuries.

The girl was apparently running towards an icecream van yesterday at about 5.30pm when the incident occurred.

A neighbour, who lives next door to the family in Worcester Drive, Rayleigh, said: "I heard a scream and screeching of brakes.

"I went to the balcony and saw the little girl being carried across the road by her mother. She banged on my door for a towel and I came with her."

An Essex Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that the youngster was rescued from under the car by neighbours almost immediately.

She was taken to Southend Hospital with what appeared to be serious leg and abdomen injuries.
