Liam Chilvers said today he had no hesitation in signing a new contract for Colchester United that will tie him to the club for the next two seasons.

Speaking exclusively to the Evening Gazette from his holiday beach in Marbella, the former Arsenal defender said: "It was not a difficult decision to make.

"I'm happy to be staying in Nationwide League Division Two with Colchester.

"And knowing the club and the players as I do, plus the fact of the new faces the manager wants to bring in, I believe we can have a really big season next year."

The talented 23-year-old equally at home in central defence or at left-back has just completed a season-long loan at Layer Road after enjoying an earlier three-month spell towards the end of the season before.

Arsenal told him some months ago he was being released at the end of the season.

Chilvers, who made 45 appearances for the U's during the campaign, said: "I have agreed a two-year deal and will sign the forms on my return from holiday either later this week or early next week.

"I wanted to get things sorted out, especially after I was rushed into almost signing a three-year contract for Third Division Northampton at the same time last year."
