Alcohol could be banned in one part of Braintree town centre if a new bylaw is introduced
An alchohol no-go zone is being proposed by Braintree Council for an area around St Michael's Church and the fountain to stamp out anti-social behaviour
The council's cabinet has revealed that it intends to apply to introduce a bylaw, which would be the first of its kind in the district, banning the consumption of alcohol in the area, identified as a trouble "hot spot".
It would be enforced by the police, community safety officers and special constables, who would have the power to confiscate alchohol and administer on-the-spot fine.
Wendy Schmitt, cabinet member for the new post of public protection, said proposals for the zone were in the early stages and research would be carried out for the feasibility of applying for the bylaw under the Criminal Justice and Police Act.
If approved, it is hoped it will come into force within the current financial year.
