Westcliff Lawn is planning an annual tournament with Southend's Polish twin town Sopot following a successful exchange visit.

Five players from Westcliff Lawn visited the northern Polish town on the return exchance.

And the trip - after the Poles came to Southend - was so successful that plans were made for the annual competition.

"We have invited our Polish counterparts back to this country next year and will be looking to repay their hospitality at that time," said Westcliff Lawn club captain Steve Wynn.

"We are hoping that an annual event can be set up between our club and Sopot tennis club."

Wynn was joined on the trip by Mike Fahie-Wilson, Geoff Spillett, Iain McDonald and Richard Ward.

They travelled via Warsaw to Gdansk and then on to the Baltic resort of Sopot to play on the tennis club's clay courts.

Original plans for a mini tournament were shelved in favour of social tennis among all of the players from both countries.

They played around 50 sets and countback revealed honours were fittingly even between the hosts and visitors.
