Fears have been raised that the closure of two of the Basildon district's sports centres at weekends could lead to the axing of other vital services.

Basildon Council says Basildon Sports Centre in Nethermayne, and Bromford Sports Centre in Wickford, may not open at weekends, saving tens of thousands of pounds.

Ken Laundy, of Basildon Sports Council, feared it would lead to a drop-off in young people undertaking healthy sporting activities.

He said: "Once again leisure services are being hit. I realise there are shortfalls and we need to be efficient, but the council keeps talking about encouraging people do to sport, yet we have a situation where the centres are closing."
