Organisers are desperately trying to think of ways to save the fourth Brightlingsea Free Music Festival after an unexpected cut in funding.

The committee is having financial blues after a relied-upon grant fell through.

The bad news means that, if the £4,000 funding is not found somewhere else, the entertainments at the July 30 and 31 event will have to be watered down.

Last month there was good news when a grant that had been applied for from Community Reach was received, as well as substantial donations from an unnamed generous local businessman, and Brightlingsea Town Council.

However, it all turned sour this week with the news that an additional grant had been rejected.

The expected £4,000 was nearly one third of the cost of running the whole festival, so organisers are having to rethink how to run this year's event with only six weeks to go.

A spokesman said: "As you may imagine, the organisers have had to put on their thinking caps to try to see either how extra money can be raised, or whether some of the attractions can be 'watered down'."

The organising committee is actively seeking additional sponsorship, and if anybody can help, they can call John Stannard on 01206 303069.
