More than 1,000 Castle Point youngsters are this week learning how to avoid danger and save lives.
They are taking part part in the Crucial Crew event staged by police and emergency services specially for Year Six pupils who are just about to leave junior school.
PC Jacque Barber, schools partnership officer, said: "They have to work through about ten different safety scenarios and think on their feet.
"They have to make a decision that could save someone's life.
"We've got activities covering electrical safety, postcoding property, first aid, Essex Fire and Rescue Service talking about smoke detectors and the dangers of hoax calls, road safety, water safety, Asda staff talking about lorry safety."
The Castle Point youngsters will be put through their paces for the Crucial Crew event at Belchamps Scout Centre, in Hollyoak Lane, Hawkwell.
