A care home for people with learning difficulties in Halstead is set to close.

Although Essex County Council has been praised for the way it has handled the situation, a question has been raised over the future provision of respite care.

Nether Priors, in Colchester Road, is to close because the building design does not reach the strict modern day standards required for it by the National Care Standards Commission.

The county council said, after consulting with residents, staff and the local community, it was decided it would not be possible to renovate the building without excessive costs or damaging the building.

The home was built in the 1970s and until recently provided 16 places for residents with learning difficulties.

The residents have been found alternative accommodation within the Halstead community.
