The Canvey Island duo of John Kennedy and Lee Boylan both played a part as the England National game X1 earned a goalless draw against the USA in Charleston.

Kennedy, a regular for the side, played the whole game with Boylan, a 57-goal star with Gulls last term, coming on for his debut as a substitute after 59 minutes.

The match was played in front of a 1,863 crowd at the Blackbaud Stadium.

The USA carried the greater goal threat, but could not find a way to break England's defences.

Charleston Battery forward Paul Conway came close in the fourth minute when Richmond Kickers' midfielder Mike Burke picked out Conway inside the box, but the latter's shot went wide of Matt Baker's goal.

In the 27th minute, the US created another good goal-scoring opportunity.

Minnesota Timbers' midfielder Marco Ferruzzi collected the ball wide on the left. He drifted toward the 18-yard-box and fired a right-footed shot on target.

Baker then made an excellent diving save and deflected the ball over the bar.

England's first chance of the game came in the 53rd minute. Substitute midfielder Gary Thompson sent a searching ball in from the right side.

Forward Steve Guinan -- just prior to being substituted by Boylan -- met the cross, but his glancing shot was well saved by Charleston Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock.

England midfielder Gareth Sheldon forced another save from Hudock in the 72nd minute when he cut in from the left side and hit a hard right-footed shot at the goal.
