Work being carried out by health staff to improve the lives of older people has been showcased at a national event.

James Mihill, Falls Prevention Co-ordinator for Maldon and South Chelmsford Primary Care Trust (PCT), gave a presentation at Newmarket Racecourse at the Older Persons' Champion event on Sharing Good Practices regarding the use of exercise to prevent elderly people having a fall.

"It was about how we at the PCT work with other agencies and actually get things done rather than just talk about it," said James.

"The feedback we had was very positive. I think people were surprised at just how much we do liaise with other agencies."

Members of the Taoist Tai Chi society accompanied James and gave a demonstration of the benefits the eastern low-impact exercise can have for older people.

"It is one of the many forms of exercise that we recommend, as it helps prevent falls," said James. "We get referrals from people over 65 who have had a fall or who are a bit unsteady on their feet.

"The best advantage for older people is that we can help them maintain their independence and keep them in a social circle. The best advantage for us is that we are helping to keep them out of hospitals and away from their GP."
