Soccer fans were left crying in their beer after England's crushing defeat by France.

Pubs across the county were packed out as supporters gathered round large screens and united behind the team.

Insp Pete Gerrard, of Tendring police, said fans had behaved themselves despite the disappointment of the Euro 2004 result.

Only one man was arrested, accused of actual bodily harm, following an incident at Tom Peppers Club, in Pier Avenue, at 11.32pm.

There was no reported football-related violence yesterday either in the Braintree district, Maldon or Chelmsford.

A Braintree police spokesman said any trouble experienced over the weekend was nothing out of the ordinary.
