A teenager has been seriously injured in a drunken street brawl involving more than a dozen people.

The 19-year-old, from Grays, was today in a serious but stable condition at hospital for treatment on severe head injuries.

The drunken fighting took place in Brentwood on Friday night when brawling thugs are alleged to have chased each other around the town centre.

When police arrived at Hart Street, just behind the High Street, at approximately 9.50pm the gangs ran off. The victim was found on the pavement.

He was immediately rushed to Oldchurch Hospital, in Romford.

Another man required stitches to glass cuts on his hands.

An 18-year-old from Brentwood was arrested and has been charged with grievous bodily harm. He will appear at Grays Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.
