Shopkeepers in Chelmsford are being warned not to accept Scottish banknotes on face value after a series of forgeries were found in circulation.
The £20 notes have been used to purchase items worth a few pounds with criminals making a profit on the change.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "Check the validity of all Scottish £20 notes, consult a bank, or simply refuse to accept the notes."
Forgeries have so far been found in Chelmsford, Danbury and Brentwood.
