The family of a man critically injured in a hit-and-run accident have told of their anger after the uninsured driver avoided jail.

Robert Hall, 20, of Varden Drive, Leigh, spent a week on a life-support machine suffering from serious head injuries and a collapsed lung after the accident in Sutherland Boulevard, Leigh.

The Royal Bank of Scotland clerk and local DJ was driving to work in his black Honda Civic when he collided with a white van about 8.15am on March 2 this year.

Mr Hall still cannot work or socialise because he is deaf in one ear and struggles to process information.

Antony Cooney, 38, a painter and decorator of Daws Heath Road, Thundersley, was handed a 200-hour community punishment order and a £200 fine and was banned from driving for 18 months.

He admitted in Southend Magistrates' Court to failing to stop at the accident, careless driving and driving without insurance.

Robert's dad, David Hall, 51, said: "The driver should have been jailed. The ban and the fine are an insult."
