Bosses are banning council workers from flying the flag for England in the run-up to Euro 2004 branding it 'laddish and unprofessional'.
Officers at Colchester Council's Colchester Borough Homes have visited patriotic workers and told them to remove the England flags from their vehicles.
Joe Martin, who works in the repairs section at Colchester Borough Homes, has refused to remove his from his work van.
He said bosses visited his work yard on Wednesday and told everyone to remove the items.
Mr Martin, who has worked for the company for two years, said: "Everyone in England is doing it so why should we be an exception?"
A spokesman for Inspace Partnerships, which carries out maintenance on Colchester Borough Homes' buildings, said: "This is a policy agreed and shared by Colchester Borough Homes. We decided not to allow flags on our vans as paraphernalia like that does not quite fit with our business."
