Castle Point Labour Party denies its defeat at the ballot box last week will affect its chances in the next general election.
In the local elections Labour lost its last remaining seat on Castle Point Council, but party officials still think they will be able to win the parliamentary seat.
Luke Akehurst, parliamentary spokesman for Castle Point Constituency Labour Party, said: "It must be remembered Castle Point is one of the most marginal constituencies in the country and a minute swing can result in a Labour MP being elected rather than a Tory.
"These were local elections based on local issues, and it would be wrong to extrapolate and make predictions for the general election."
