Surgeons carried out an emergency operation after part of a man's ear was bitten off.

The man arrived at Colchester General Hospital holding the severed fragment. He was transferred to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, to have it sewn back on.

He declined to make a report to police.

It is thought the incident, believed to have taken place at a party, must have happened shortly before he was admitted, as it would not have been possible to reattach the piece of ear if a long period of time had elapsed.
