Essex and Gloucestershire contested a thrilling tie in their day/night Totesport League match at Chelmsford.
The visitors made 234-7 from their 45 overs. Batting second, Essex needed two runs to win off the final delivery but ended up one short when Paul Grayson was run out.
The home side got off to a good start with Ravi Bopara making 55. Grayson and Graham Napier also scored well and Essex needed just five runs off the final over.
Essex scored singles off the first three balls, but a dot followed by Martyn Ball's catch off his own bowling to remove James Middlebrook took it down to the final ball.
Ashley Cowan hit the ball to fielder, Chris Taylor, at long on. The first run was easy but Grayson was then beaten by Taylor's accurate throw to Ball.
