A new multi-purpose driving test centre could be located in Chelmsford under plans unveiled by the Driving Standards Agency.
The Agency aims to set up nearly 60 new centres throughout Britain over a four year period.
The multi-purpose centres are designed to improve safety for a new set of manoeuvres that are being introduced to the motorcycle test.
The centres would allow these new skills, which involve speeds of over 30 miles per hour, to be assessed off-road at the centre, before the test continues on public highways.
Testing of car drivers could also be moved to the centre as part of the test.
Chief Driving Examiner Robin Cummins said: "Although we have identified Chelmsford as a possible location, we are still only at the planning stage at present."
